Report from the Web Navigation Design Workshop

Posted on: November 28, 2008

Our recent Web Navigation Design workshop went off without a hitch thanks to ace presenter Jim Kalbach and my capable partner Ulrike. The participants sparked conversation right away and dove in to the exercises enthusiastically.

Whitney Hess tweeted and blogged the event, commenting:

I was particularly thankful that Jim spent a considerable amount of time in the morning going over strategy and business objectives. This “up front” work often gets glossed over or is talked about very abstractly. Jim did a great job in setting up structured activities that each of us can use to bring clarity and discipline to the often-befuddled early stages of a project.

Here’s some photos and comments from participants:

Everyone who filled out the anonymous post-workshop survey said they would recommend the workshop to a friend, and here’s why:

The workshop was very inspiring, informational and well structured. I learned a lot and thought James was a superb and very knowledgeable teacher. Thank you for this great workshop.

Jim did a wonderful job synthesizing a lot of theories into clearly organized and thoughtful principles. There was a ton of content, but Jim made it all very digestible. I’m sure I’ll refer to my notes whenever a navigation design challenge arises.

Lots of good info and practical exercises to illustrate principles. Cores & Paths methodology was especially helpful.

The perfect size class for great conversations and full of usefull information. I learned new approaches to many of the techniques I use every day. Great lecture! thank you.

Because it changed the way we think about web navigation and supplied us the tools in order to implement them. We also appreciated the smaller-interactive class. Thank you.

Brought up methods of design that are effective and applicable.

James was a terrific speaker and organized his talk very well. He shared so much in the day-long workshop. It was a great balance of lecture, discussion and exercises. Love getting the book also! Thanks so much. I look forward to coming to another SE workshop.
